Knowledge in the Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) by health professionals in general is of paramount importance so that there is a service as fully as possible to the person with hearing impairment. The objective was to elucidate the importance of knowledge of sign language for nursing professionals in assisting women with hearing impairment in primary care. This bibliographical research has an integrative review methodology. The construction of this research was based on the search for materials in the Scielo, PubMed and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases, using “Libras”, “hearing impairment”, “women’s health” and “nursing” as descriptors. . In carrying out the search for articles, 43 articles were initially found; with the application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the stages of this search, 09 articles remained that fit the objective of this study. It is concluded that although it is provided by law that there are a number of health professionals with knowledge in Libras or interpret in the places that provide health care, this is not put into practice. This becomes worrying due to the need for specialized attention and the consequences that the communication deficit can cause. Libras needs to have its importance recognized from the beginning of the nurse's training and throughout its performance through qualifications.
