Abstract

The aim of this work was to study the effect of photoperiod regimes in the metabolism of the diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans in relation to biomass production and lipid accumulation. The experiments were performed in an incubator with photoperiod, illuminance of 3,000 lx, aeration of 0.2 L min-1 and temperature of 30ºC, testing the regimes12L:12D h and 24L:0D h (L = Light; D = Dark). The results were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t-test at 95% confidence level (p≤0.05). The photoperiod regime 24L:0D h provided higher lipid accumulation (13.5%), maximum biomass concentration (0.54 g L-1) and maximum productivity (0.07 g L-1 day-1), in comparison with the regime 12L:12D h, that presented significantly lower values of lipid content (6.0%), maximum biomass concentration ( 0.22 g L –1) and maximum productivity (0.02 g L-1 day-1), indicating that the time of exposure to luminosity affects the metabolism of this microorganism.
