Abstract

This study discusses the logic and practice of affective control at two multinational organizations based on processes of identification with a leader and a myth. The social and psychological control is crucial for organizations to achieve their goals and stay alive in a fierce competitive market. This practice has undergone constant improvements, resulting in the control of behaviors and thoughts out of the affective engagement. Identification is a subjective and psychical process, difficult to detect, but of effective control. In order to achieve the proposed analysis, a cross-sectional qualitative and descriptive field survey was conducted in two multinational organizations: an industry of metallurgy, with a strong presence of the founding myth as an identificatory element, and a logistics company, where a strong connection can be observed between the organization and individuals through the chief executive figure, a very effective leader. In conclusion, loving fascination and identification with the leader and myth figures are found to characterize a relationship of control and power that channels the libidinal energy for productive aims and, thus, serve the designs of contemporary capitalist organizations.
